ChromaPure named best calibration software of 2010!
January 18, 2011

A big congratulations to Tom for winning the best calibration software of 2010 award from Secrets of Home Theater and High Fidelity! Well deserved!

"ChromaPure is very straight forward in it's process ... for the home user that simply wants to calibrate their display quickly and easily, it's very easy to get going and get fantastic results in a single evening, with no steep learning curve. I really loved using ChromaPure. It was simple, powerful, and fast. With the integrated pattern generation features, it sped up my calibrations by a ton, so that I could do one in under an hour without a problem. Tom Huffman was also very responsive, answering all of the questions that I had, and taking all of my suggestions to heart... If I was starting with nothing, and wanted to calibrate my own displays, I would purchase the i1 Display 2 with ChromaPure package, as it's an easy way to get started and get great results if your display gives you access to a full CMS." - Chris Heinonen and Mark Vignola of HomeTheaterHiFi.com

Three sets will be offered:

Star Wars: The Complete Saga on Blu-ray (9-disc Set - All six films plus 3 bonus discs)

Star Wars: Prequel Blu-ray Trilogy (3-disc set - Episodes I-III)

The press event at CES contained few details other the fact that the 9 disc set will include all 6 films and "more than 30 hours of extensive special features including never-before-seen deleted and alternate scenes, an exploration of the exclusive Star Wars archives, and much more". Fox Home Entertainment president Mike Dunn also told the crowd that the films will be offered on BD-50s with a bit rate of up to 40mpbs. (Here's hoping they don't use excessive noise reduction or the like!).

It has not been announced which versions these are, who shot first, or what other changes may or may not have been done to the films. It's said that the project is being personally supervised by George Lucas himself (stop messing with your movies George!).

See our official 'Star Wars - The Complete Saga on Blu-ray' forum thread for the latest news and to read the official press release!

Official press release:

RadianceMini 3D joins the award winning Lumagen® Radiance™ video processor family.

January 6, 2011 — Lumagen®, Inc., a specialist in the design and manufacture of video products for the home and corporate markets, is announcing the RadianceMini 3D. The RadianceMini 3D joins other members of the Radiance family, which includes the CEA® 2010 Platinum Video Product of the Year, the RadianceXE.

The RadianceMini 3D sports two HDMI® inputs, and one HDMI output, and can be controlled by either the included IR remote, or by RS-232. Control and setup are the same as other units in the Radiance family. In addition, it provides the same exceptional video quality that the Radiance line has become known for. The unit’s case measures in at a diminutive 8.5” by 5” by 1.05” (216mm by 127mm by 27mm) and has mounting tabs so it can be fastened to a shelf, or to the wall behind a flat-panel display.

HDMI 1.4 3D is supported, including scaling and aspect ratio control for 3D Bluray movies for use with an anamorphic lens, such as those produced by Panamorph®. For dual-projector 3D, two units can be used with each receiving 3D and outputting video for either the left-eye or right-eye.

Jim Peterson, Lumagen’s president, stated, “Our customers have been asking us for a new Radiance product optimized for small systems. The RadianceMini 3D fulfills this request, as well as the need for premier video processing when another product, such as an AVR, or HDMI matrix-switch, is being used for source selection.”

As with the other members of the Radiance line, proprietary No-ring™ scaling, linear-Gamma RGB-color-palette CMS, 21-point parametric grayscale calibration, video deinterlacing, MPEG artifact reduction, temporal noise reduction, and other features, combine to provide the best video quality available.

The RadianceMini 3D is currently available, and is priced at $1995 MSRP.

See our updated Radiance order page for more details and pictures!

New Full Range Electrostatic Loudspeakers and other high-end products!
December 31, 2010

New full range electrostatic loudspeakers and other high-end products are now available at special CurtPalme.com discounted prices! MORE INFO »

Happy New Year everyone!

CurtPalme.com is expanding and we're starting by featuring more high-end audio and home theater products!

Normally high-end also means over-inflated high prices. Not so here. Together with our Crescendo-Systems partner CurtPalme.com is able to reduce costs due to the lack of audiophile sales & marketing mark-up typically associated with high-end low-volume products.

For example, true full range electrostatic speakers normally sell for over $20-30K USD from other manufacturers. Our price? Under $4-5K depending on size and finish.

Read some of the literature from some high-end manufacturers and they'll have you believe there's something almost 'magical' about what they've been able to achieve (probably to make you feel better about spending all that money). Hogwash. Good products come from good sound engineering and design, attention to detail, and hard work. Nothing more, nothing less.

At CurtPalme.com we eliminate the middle man and mark-up to deliver the same performance at a fraction of the cost, leaving you more money for other toys!

Reviews/Testimonials

"I don't want to sound like a cheerleader for ChromaPure but in my opinion realistically, even using it manually, the ChromaPure software is much easier to use and is more flexible than [other commercial calibration software], hence, in the end faster with better and more consistent results." - Ron W

"Last night I had my first opportunity to use ChromaPure on the famed JVC D-ILA 750HD Front Projector. Calibrating the Color Management System (CMS) with the Color Management Module on ChromaPure was, dare I say?...a "BREEZE". Yes...CMS is a breeze with this software! I can't overstate my wholehearted endorsement of ChromaPure and Tom Huffman, the man who "wrote the book" on Color Management. In fact, I traded my [other commercial calibration] software in to get the ChromaPure System specifically for new generation displays with Color Management Systems, as well as LED illuminated displays." - Bill Hergonson, Owner, Coast Calibration, Carlsbad, CA. ISF/HAA Level II Certified

"I asked Tom what his key goals were when he set off to develop ChromaPure. He said that he wanted to offer a calibration program that incorporated the features that he wanted to use, along with a well thought out workflow. I’m pleased to report that ChromaPure has delivered on those goals and more. ChromaPure is an excellent calibration program that is well worth the very reasonable purchase price. The software is easy to use, well thought out and is very stable. The CMS support is a standout feature that is not available in competing products and by itself is worth the price of the software. When combined with all of the other features like multiple colorspace support and multiple color difference model support, the program is a compelling bargain. I found that the program yielded excellent results while significantly speeding up my calibration times. After using the program, I’ve decided to use ChromaPure for all of my display calibration needs. Future display reviews on this blog will be done using ChromaPure, so expect the graphs from ChromaPure to show up often." - Mark Petersen of VideoVantage.com

CRT projector parts blowout and Dwin 700 special
November 22, 2010

See our CRT Primer to read why CRT projectors are still used in home theaters where picture quality is paramount. Our Projector Rankings page will show you how they stack up. Not sure what projector is right for you? Email Curt for help!

It’s been a while since I’ve sent out a list of projectors for sale so here's an update: I am maintaining the stock of all 8 and 9” projectors, thus the minimal changes in the available projectors, and have lowered the pricing of most 7" projectors. I usually end up selling the high end projectors before they get onto the website.

What I will do is feature one projector at a ‘blowout’ price from time to time. This is to move some stock, as I still have over 100 projectors in stock. This month’s feature is a Dwin 700 projector, comes with ceiling bracket and remote control. I’ve been selling these for $1000 generally, but I’ve got 6 here at this point, all in really good shape. Minimal tube wear, a great 1000 lumen 720p/1080i projector.

Note that the tubes in these can also be used in the Barco Cine 7 and late model 708 projectors, so if you only want the tube set, I can pull them out and put Barco high voltage (HV) wires on them at no extra charge, and I’ll keep the chassis here.

Dwin 700 blowout price: $600.00

What I do have too many of as well are projector parts. I’ve been hoarding boards for the last 10 years, and it’s time to slaughter pricing on a bunch of them. So here goes:

  • Barco analog projector: This includes Barco 400, 600, 1000, 1500, etc. At this point I only have one Barco 400 and one 600 here. I will sell whatever boards I have left for these sets at $5.00 each as is, or $10.00 each tested prior to shipping. Most of the boards that I have should be good, so if you’re still running one of the older analog projectors. Here’s a good way to keep them running by stocking up on spare boards.
  • Sony 10XX: Any board, untested, at $5.00 each. The only exclusion are the Sony 1030 and 1031 power supplies, as I only have one of each in working condition. I’ve got parts for the 1000, 1001, 1020, 1030, 1031, 1040, 1041, 1042 and 1044. Again, most boards work, only a few in my large boxes have ‘issues’.
  • Electrohome ECP: Almost all parts for the ECP projectors, again, I’ve got too many here. Same pricing, $5.00 each untested, $10 tested in a set prior to shipping. The pricing excludes HV and LV power supplies.
  • Ampro 2000 and 4000: $5.00 each untested, $10 each tested. The exception here are the HV and LV power supplies.
  • Ampro 3300, 3600 and 4600: $20 each untested, $35 each tested. The exclusion are the CPU boards and LV and HV power supplies.
  • Sony 12XX (except 1292): All boards except for the top two deflection boards and the LVPS: $10 each, the CA (G) and CA (B) boards are $40 each. Some boards are in very limited supply, first come first served.
  • Barco 500, 800 and 801: All boards, $10 each in tested condition. Exclusions are the LVPS and the convergence board which are $50 each in tested condition. HV quadruplers and HV splitters are not included in this pricing.
  • Barco 808, 1208, 1209 and 1209s: I’ve parted out a bunch of these sets over the last few years, and again, I’ve got enough to keep the world going for 25 years at least. Time to get rid of some. $50 each in tested, modded and working condition. Some boards as in SMPS are very limited in stock, so first come first served. I’ve got many in large quantities though.
  • Marquee 8000 and 9000: $15 each for untested boards, $25 each for tested ones. Again, the vast majority are in good shape and work fine, but I’m charging a bit more if you want me to test run them for a few hours before shipping. Exclusions are HVPS and LVPS modules.
  • NEC PG, XG, and Sony D50, G70, G90 parts: While I don’t have nearly as many NEC or Sony parts as I do Electrohome, Ampro and Barco, I’m willing to make some deals on some of the boards that I have multiples of. Email me with what you need.

Please note also that I’m selling these boards as straight parts orders only. Pricing does not include diagnosing projector problems via email, these prices are so that you can keep some spare boards in case of failure.

Also, for anyone semi local to me in the Vancouver area, I’ve built up quite the stock of LCD computer monitors, and have gotten really good at repairing them. Pricing is usually under half of typical retail pricing:

  • 15” monitor: $30
  • 17” monitor: $55
  • 19” monitor: $75
  • 20” and larger: $80 and up

Almost all makes and models are available, 30 day warranty with each unit, and discounts available if you trade an old non-working LCD monitor in, or if you already have the VGA and power cords. I’ve been rebuilding these for a year now, using better quality Japanese made replacement parts than the originals used in the monitors. Power supply failures are common in computer monitors, and my repair percentage has been excellent.

Also if anyone is interested, I’ve gotten into more audio repairs lately, and regularly list overhauled audio equipment as well as other goodies that I stumble across. See my eBay listings under ‘audiovideotechnician’.

Felston DD740 Digital Audio Delay: Fix Lip-Sync Error for Good!
November 12, 2010

We've worked out an exclusive deal for our members to bring you this product at a price lower than anywhere else on the internet! ORDER NOW »

When you watch TV or movies, do you ever notice how picture and sound are sometimes OUT OF SYNC? The presenter's lips don't move quite at the same time as their voice? Irritating isn't it. This is known as lip sync error.

Even if you haven't consciously noticed lip-sync error (we avoid this impossibility by subconsciously looking away) research at Stanford University discovered it causes a negative impact on our perception of the characters and story.

Lip sync error affects a huge number of displays, including modern plasma TVs, LCD screens, DLP TVs and digital projectors.

What causes lip sync error?

There are many causes but most boil down to the video signal being delayed more than the audio signal allowing speech to be heard 'before' the lip movement that produced it is seen.  Digital image processing within broadcasts and within modern displays delays video and allows audio to arrive too soon. Sound "before" the action that produces it can never occur in nature and is therefore very disturbing when the brain tries to process this conflicting and impossible visual and aural information.

How do you fix lip sync error?

The only way to correct lip-sync error caused by delayed video is to delay audio an equal amount. The Felston DD740 digital audio delay solves lip-sync error by letting you add an audio delay to compensate for all the cumulative video delays - no matter what their cause - at the touch of a button on its remote.

Unlike the audio delay feature found in most a/v receivers, the DD740 is designed for easy "on-the-'fly" adjustment while viewing with no image disturbance. This makes fine tuning for perfect lip-sync practical as it changes between programs or discs, and the DD740's 680ms delay corrects larger lip-sync errors common in HDTV.

JETI Specbos 1201/1211 Reference Spectroradiometers with ChromaPure
November 10, 2010

Now available at a special CurtPalme.com discounted price! ORDER NOW »

The Specbos 1201 and 1211 are the most affordable true reference color analyzers available on the market today. Just mount either on a tripod, facing towards the source, connect to ChromaPure Professional and use as you would any other color analyzer.

At some point many professionals conclude that their work requires a reference colour analyzer. SMPTE has established standards for such a device. It must measure color accurately to within ±0.002 xy at or above 10 cd/m2 and luminance accurately to within ±0.5 cd/m2 for white field measurements. These are very exacting specifications that no tristimulus colorimeter can achieve, at least for chromaticity. For this level of accuracy you must have a 5nm spectroradiometer.

Unfortunately, such devices are not cheap. The Photo Research and Minolta reference devices start at about $15,000 and go up to near $30,000. The X-Rite EyeOne Pro is reasonably affordable, but it is a 10nm device that cannot routinely achieve ±0.002 xy accuracy. Furthermore, in addition to being expensive, true reference devices also often suffer from practical limitations. They can be slow and have problems with low-light readings.

Recently, a German company JETI Reference Instruments has developed two true reference spectroradiometers, the Specbos 1201 (also known in the U.S. as the Orb Optronics SP100) and the Specbos 1211, that solve most of these problems.

First, they are relatively affordable, that is at least what passes as "affordable" in the context of reference devices. Second, both are reasonably fast for higher luminance sources, and the 1211 is speedy even with low luminance sources. They are also amazingly compact and portable and both include a nifty laser spotter that allows for accurate aiming.

The only feature these incredible devices give up to the established Photo Research and Minolta competitors is stand-alone operation. The Minolta and Photo Research alternatives allow for aiming through optical sights and readouts on a small LCD screen. They are fully functional devices without a PC. In contrast, the JETI devices work only when attached to a PC via USB with custom software (such as ChromaPure of course!). For display/home theater calibration this is a non-issue as you'll be using calibration software anyway.

Both units share a similar design and software support. Both achieve reference levels of accuracy. The differences? Well, the 1211 is larger than the 1201 and about 30% more expensive. But surely the most important difference is low-light sensitivity. The 1211 is MUCH more sensitive than the 1201. At light levels at or above 50 cd/m2 (14.6 fL) they perform similarly, but as you go lower than this the 1201 begins to take noticeably longer and longer to return a reading. At 4 cd/m2 (1.2 fL) the 1201 will take approximately a minute-and-a-half to return a reading. By way of contrast, at this level of stimulus, the 1211 chugs happily along returning a reading in about 5 seconds.

This has profound implications for day-to-day use when calibrating displays. For this reason, the 1201 is best used for color management, when light levels are generally high, or as a reference device employed to create an offset for a field colorimeter, such as the Chroma 5 or Hubble. The 1211, on the other hand, can be used as a working or field color analyzer (one that is not solely only used to create offsets to make other faster meters accurate). Its speed and low-light sensitivity make it suitable for any calibration task—except perhaps reading black level—where the light level is so low even the 1211 often cannot cope. Fortunately, very low light levels can be accurately read with quite inexpensive instruments, such as the AEMC CA813 illuminance meter. The Chroma 5 will read down to about 0.01 fL, and the Hubble will read down to 0.001 fL.

Price drops on DVDO iScan Duo, EyeOne Pro, and Chroma 5 PRO bundles
October 16, 2010

We've sharpened our pencils and are now offering lower prices on bundles that featuring the DVDO iScan Duo video processor, EyeOne Pro spectroradiometer, and the Chroma 5 PRO colorimeter.

All of these  new lower priced bundles include the new ChromaPure 2.0 Video Calibration Software with many new features and enhancements.

All three are respective leaders in their fields. Amazing performance at previously unattainable prices!

DVDO iScan Duo Video Processor

The Duo is much like a high-end home theater receiver without the amplifier section. What makes the Duo truly special however is the comprehensive set of video calibration controls it also offers. The Duo's calibration controls allow any user with the right equipment to dial in an image to near perfection.

Before the Duo, there simply was no product on the market that offered this mix of powerful video processing, switching, user-friendliness, and a full set of calibration tools at anywhere near the price of the Duo. Read more »

EyeOne Pro Spectroradiometer

The EyeOne Pro is a true spectrophotometer, and thus offers the most accurate readings for the widest range of displays at an affordable price.  The EyeOne Pro's only drawback is relatively limited low-light sensitivity. Thus, it is a nearly ideal choice for use together with the Display 2 or Chroma 5 colorimeter, both of which can work well in very low light settings. Simply create an offset in ChromaPure using the EyeOne Pro as a reference and then use that offset to correct the response of the Display 2 or Chroma 5.

The combination of the EyeOne Pro together with either of these colorimeters offers excellent accuracy, speed, and low-light sensitivity and is suitable for professional calibrations. Read more »

Chroma 5 PRO Colorimeter

The Chroma 5 PRO is a colorimeter that offers professional grade performance at a price affordable to the amateur hobbyist or enthusiast. Our tests show that the Chroma 5 PRO offers accuracy for color and the white point that in the majority of cases exceeds that of the EyeOne Pro. Furthermore, its luminance readings are far superior to the EyeOne Pro, both in terms of general accuracy and certainly in dynamic range.

Quite simply, we believe that this is the best sub-$1000 meter for video calibration on the market today. Is it a true reference device? No. But at this price it comes as close as any device we are aware of to this standard. Read more »

About twice a year we like to run through a complete tune-up to make sure all our TVs and projectors are still perfectly calibrated. Most people don't realize that calibration changes as the components age, or for CRT based displays, as the earth's rotation shifts! (Due to the shifting magnetic field).

Calibration is not something you "do once and forget about". Not even close.

If your displays are already calibrated like ours it's usually a pretty fast process of just running through the steps and making some minor tweaks here and there. The tweaks are typically not major, but doing this twice a year as seasons change (or whenever you change equipment or settings) ensures that the calibration errors stay minimal resulting in the best image quality possible.

One of the most important parts is greyscale and colour calibration, so consider this your friendly reminder to get your meters & laptops out tonight and give your setups the quick once-over! Your TV thanks you for it!

Don't have calibration software or a meter? Check out our extensive free Greyscale & Colour Calibration for Dummies guide. It's for the home theater enthusiast who wants to get the absolute best picture out of any TV or projector. It will show you how to obtain the most accurate colours possible on any display regardless of what sort of technology it uses (Plasma, LCD, DLP, SXRD, LCOS, CRT, etc). No prior knowledge or understanding of greyscale or colour calibration is required. In fact, you may not even know what "greyscale calibration" is at all! That's fine! We explain why it's important along with exactly what tools are needed and how to use them.

Want an faster/easier solution that doesn't require as much reading? Use ChromaPure calibration software instead. We offer it at an exclusive CurtPalme.com discount.

Confused about meters?  See our FAQ: Which meter is right for me?

*We apologize to our friends south of the equator: Replace "Fall" with "Spring".

ChromaPure v1.3.1 now available for download
July 21, 2010

ChromaPure v1.3.1 is now available for immediate download for existing customers. This release offers a few bug fixes identified in 1.3.

Customers still using 1.2.1 who want to upgrade should email user support for an updated license file (it's free).

What's new in 1.3.1?

  • The meter mode drop-down incorrectly displayed Generic LCD as the default choice when CRT was the actual default. This has been fixed.
  • The DTP-94 meter used fL when cd/m2 was selected as the default luminance.
  • The Pre and Post-Calibration Greyscale modules displayed greyed-out selections until activated by auto-advance. This prevented the user from selecting any desired level until all readings had been taken. The greyscale levels are no longer initially greyed out.

ChromaPure is new, very easy to use, home theater video calibration software that is garnering a lot of industry attention. We're proud to offer it to our readers at special CurtPalme.com discounted prices!

New VIM-FULLHD v3 HDMI card for Marquee projectors
July 21, 2010

Moome's just announced that he's now shipping the new version 3 of his popular VIM-FULLHD HDMI input card for Electrohome Marquee projectors and clones (Madrigal, Vidikron, etc).

What's new in Version 3?

The new version 3 board adds the following new features:

Marquee switcher support: You can now use the card in a Marquee switch box instead of directly in the projector. Older cards did not work in Marquee switchers. (Refer to the v3 manual for the special DIP switch settings).

DTS-HD / Dolby True HD lossless audio support: Allows you to use an HDMI receiver or pre-amp between your Blu-ray player and projector to decode lossless audio. Previously this did not work correctly. The EDID has now been updated so this will work.

Cleaner video power: A large coil filter has been added to clean up the video power, further reducing image noise on screen.

Manual selection of input color mode: The previous card auto-detected the colour space. While this typically works correctly, some users like to be able to force the colour space mode. This is now possible using 4 new buttons on the remote:

Button 4: Auto Detect Input Colour Space
Button 5: Set Input Color Space at YCbCr 422
Button 6: Set Input Color Space at YCbCr 444
Button 7: Set Input Color Space at RGB 444

Remote control beep confirmation: In the past it was difficult to know if the card is receiving the signals when you press buttons on the remote. The card now 'beeps' every time you press a button to give you positive feedback.

ChromaPure calibration software and new PRO meters!
June 25, 2010

We've worked out an exclusive deal for our members to bring you ChromaPure calibration software & meter packages at prices lower than anywhere else on the internet! Buy direct from our ChromaPure partner at prices lower than buying off their own website! Same product, same support, just more money in your pocket at the end of the day.

Confused about meters?  See our FAQ: Which meter is right for me?

ChromaPure
is new, very easy to use, home theater video calibration software that is garnering a lot of industry attention. We're proud to now offer it to our readers at special CurtPalme.com discounted prices!

ChromaPure was designed by experienced professional calibrator Tom Huffman whom we've known for many years now. Our very own free Greyscale & Colour Calibration for Dummies guide was originally designed around Tom's easy to follow workflow process so anyone familiar with our guide should feel right at home using ChromaPure.

ChromaPure offers an inexpensive way to adjust your high-quality television or home theater display to achieve the high performance that it is capable of. All you need is a computer and the willingness to learn a little about what is necessary for achieving excellent video performance that meets industry standards. The software is available for instant download and bundles with popular colour analyzers are available with shipping at a modest $10 USD flat rate ($40 international).

It doesn't matter if you're new to calibration or a seasoned professional, ChromaPure provides all the features you need at one low price!

Introducing the new Display 2 PRO, DTP-94 PRO, and Chroma 5 PRO!

It's a known fact that colorimeters can give erroneous results when measuring various display types, including LCDs. The errors aren't huge, but most people don't go to the trouble of calibrating their displays just to get them "close enough".  So we're introducing special "PRO" versions of the popular Display 2, DTP-94, and Chroma 5 colorimeters.

These PRO units are all individually hand tested and calibrated against a reference 5nm spectroradiometer on multiple display types. Offset tables are then created for use in ChromaPure to ensure that you get as accurate results as possible. This also compensates for any drift that may have occurred over time, essentially recalibrating your meter to better than new! We always recommend recalibration instead of buying a new meter, not only because it costs less, but because it also keeps more stuff out of landfills!

For complete details see:

These meters are available for purchase and we can also recalibrate existing meters* to this same level of enhanced accuracy. We even pay for return shipping!

*Not all Chroma 5's may be upgraded/recalibrated. See our Chroma 5 page for details.

New Colour Science Articles

We've also introducing a series of Colour Science articles. There are quite a few but the following two are definite must-reads for anyone looking at purchasing a meter or doing their own calibration:

For the complete list of articles, see here. Note that some of these articles are quite technical! The good news is that you don't need to understand the intricacies of the science behind calibration to perform an actual calibration!

Reviews/Testimonials

"ChromaPure is an excellent calibration program that is well worth the very reasonable purchase price. The software is easy to use, well thought out and is very stable. The CMS support is a standout feature that is not available in competing products and by itself is worth the price of the software. After using the program, I’ve decided to use ChromaPure for all of my display calibration needs." - Mark Petersen of VideoVantage.com

"... very easy to get going and get fantastic results in a single evening, with no steep learning curve. I really loved using ChromaPure. It was simple, powerful, and fast.

"For the home user like me, I don't want to spend hours trying to sort through the interface. I want to spend that time on the actual calibration. If its software you use only a few times a year, I think it is important that it be very intuitive and user-friendly... and I guess that is the main reason I like the looks of Tom's solution. ... I think most home users will find ChromaPure's easy-to-navigate interface a real advantage." - Stash64

"I have just received my copy of ChromaPure and it simply can do everything I want or need to easily and completely do an accurate run. My opinion is from beginner to long time pro, ChromaPure is now at the top of my list for calibration software whether it is expensive or free." - JimmyR

"Chromapure is professional grade calibration software that is easier for the novice (me) to use than HCFR. Its lay out is terrific. Being able to view gamma response in real time is brilliant. The bottom line is I'm very happy with the purchase. All I can say is WELL DONE TOM!" - Geof

"I am fairly novice at calibration, but the layout of the software and the implementation of each step really make it easy to use as well as informative." - Kadeeu

"ChromaPure is so easy to use and has a simple learning curve. Many years with HCFR have educated me to the ins and outs of video calibration and Tom's guide is a real help. The ChromaPure help is also very good. In my opinion ChromaPure is well worth the investment." - catmother

"I must say that this software rocks and is very easy to use. I was able to calibrate my RS20 to perfection. I have the EyeOne Pro/Display 2 combo. The videos on the website are very good to start you and Tom is very helpful and fast to answer questions. I have no problem recommending it." - B. Gosselin

"ChromaPure is designed with the home user in mind and I believe does a better job of stepping the beginner through the whole process and in the correct order." - Sean

"ChromaPure is a DELIGHT to use!  ... even my first attempt has produced a more striking pic, more depth, and rich natural colors." - Millerwill

"I bought the Chroma 5 Pro from Tom and am extremely happy with the results. IMHO having customized built in offsets particular to your individual meter to improve accuracy is a no brainer. And the way that Tom integrates the offsets into the license file available in a drop down when you initialize the meter makes usage easy as pie... :)" - Bob Sorel

Reviews/Testimonials

"Moome's original design squashed (attenuated) 65% of the full bandwidth when running 1080p 60Hz. With Mike's new circuit, the v2 now can resolve the entire 1080p 60Hz signal. With Moome's new design his card is the first and only option that can do full 1080p and YCbCr... the image is amazing!" - Craig Rounds, official tester, professional calibrator (www.cir-engineering.com)

"I received my XG-FULLHD HDMI card today and I love it! The picture is much better than what I was seeing previously. I was using a Sony BD300 and VP30 video processor and was never very happy with it. Now I have the VP30 plugged directly into the new HDMI card and the picture is sensational. Couldn't believe how easy it was to install and setup. Thanks Moome!!" - Rob

"It came this afternoon. A few minutes hooking it up, another few minutes with the manual adjusting the picture centering and black boost, and I'm golden. The picture is gorgeous, and looks crisper than that from my previous card. Thanks, Moome! And thanks to those that worked with you to improve your design." - Rolls-Royce

"Well the VIM module is installed in my Marquee 8500 and I love it! Moome did nice job with it. As others had stated, it's worth the wait." - Robert M.

High End Barco 909 CRT projector available
March 18, 2010

See our CRT Primer to read why CRT projectors are still used in home theaters where picture quality is paramount. Our Projector Rankings page will show you how they stack up. Not sure what projector is right for you? Email Curt for help!

We've got one Barco 909 CRT projector with ceiling bracket and remote available. This is a top of the line set, 1080p capable and beyond. It's the highest end CRT projector Barco ever made with 9" tubes and a completely redesigned chassis. The 909 is the industrialized version of the Cine 9. Both have identical specs:

  • 3200x2560 resolution
  • 180Mhz bandwidth
  • 180Khz max scanrate
  • 9" tubes with advanced 6-pole beam correction
  • 81 zones of convergence

More information is available on the Barco 909 brochure/spec sheet. The Cine 9 / 909 is rated #1 on our CRT projector rankings list.

The Cine 9 / 909 is hard to find and this one's in good shape. Case is black, in excellent condition, very minor marks. Top of the line HFQ900 lenses installed. As it sits, the set needs a green tube as it has low emission. The blue I'd rate at about a 9, the red is a 9.5.

We're offering it at three price points:

  • $5000 USD - As it sits, you install a new green tube
  • $6000 USD - New green tube installed
  • $7500 USD - A complete set of new LUG tubes installed

Option: Add Red and Green coloured C elements for $300.00.

We've got an oversized wooden crate or wheeled road case ready to go to for safe shipping! Looking for something different? We also have a Marquee 9500 Ultra that just came in that's in excellent shape.
