There is a wire connected to a quick disconnect tab in the corner of each
lens. This wire is connected to the chassis via the screw in the corner of each
lens, and the set will not run without all wires connected to ground. This is a
sensor that tells the set that the lenses are bolted to the tube, and prevents
the set from being run without the lenses in place. These wires can be shorted
to ground if you want to run the set without the lenses in place (but why would
you?)
PA board:
Also at the front of the set is the Pa board, which is under the shielded
cover under the R and G lenses. Taking this cover off exposes the Pa board which
commonly fails in these sets:
The
PA board is the high voltage regulator board, the HV driver board and contains a
number of the power supplies that power other areas of the set. This board can
fail when HV arcing occurs in the set, and each of these Pa boards is calibrated
to a number of other components in the set, so random swapping of the Pa board
will most likely cause poor focus or set shutdown, as a replacement board needs
to be calibrated to the set. This calibration cannot be done without swapping
parts on the Pa board and an HV probe is required to calibrate the high voltage.
A common fault on this board causes set shutdown and a ‘21’ error code on the
back LED display. This fault usually requires some Sony specific parts to be
ordered, generic replacement parts will not work on this board. Trust me, I
found out the hard way.
