SMPS
The switch mode power supply fails on a regular basis as it’s driven quite
hard. Failures vary, there’s no set fault in these units. There are 5 fuses that
should be checked with a continuity tester, these can blow as a result of a
fault on the actual SMPS or a short on any other board in the set can also
result in blown fuses.
As with later model Barcos , these SMPS's can have occasional bad solder
joints, but at this point due to age, components can be equally as likely to be
at fault if a problem creeps into the set.
One problem that these older Barcos can have is a squealing sound from the
SMPS, especially at high contrast and brightness levels. This is due to the
laminations of the main transformer ‘singing’ as it is loaded down. Replacement
of the SMPS or the molded transformer that is located on the SMPS is the only
cure.
